Instructor Training

Outspoken Training is an Instructor Training Organisation (ITO) approved by the Department for Transport and we deliver National Standard Instructor (NSI) training courses to individuals and organisations. Our regular scheduled courses take place in various cities around the East of England, such as Cambridge, Lincoln, Northampton and Nottingham. (see below for upcoming dates). We also deliver in other areas when required, to support our Bikeability scheme partners through the ITO.

The course

The NSI is a four-day course which will give you a thorough grounding in how to teach children and adults to the National Standard. The course is a mixture of classroom sessions and outdoor practicals, covering all of the subjects and skills you will need to become a National Standard Cycle Instructor.

The NSAI is a two day course designed for those who may not want to commit to the full four days of training or who will use the qualification less regularly. Assistant Instructors will work alongside full instructors in delivering Bikeability courses.

The full NSI course costs £350 +VAT which covers all course materials, venue hire and trainer costs. The course gives you a nationally recognised qualification. After the course, provisional instructors are expected to do two Post Course Assessments (PCAs) to become fully qualified.

We are currently looking for instructors in Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough to work for us.  If you are successful in our recruitment process, we will fund the course and put you on our training programme with mentoring and support to become a fully qualified instructor. Please have a look at our vacancies page for more details.

What are the Benefits of becoming a Cycle Training Instructor?

Cycle Training Instructors are able to deliver National Standard Cycle Training courses. These courses aim to teach trainees to ride competently on the road for leisure, transport or training. Qualified instructors may work for registered schemes to deliver Bikeability courses, thus benefiting from funding available for the delivery of Bikeability.

Who can attend?

Yes, you're eligible to attend if:

  • You are at least 18 years of age
  • You are a regular on road cyclist, who is confident riding in traffic

If you'd like to come on one of our courses, please have a look at our scheduled courses below or get in touch to see if we're running a course in your area.

What will I learn?

The course prepares you to work as a Cycle Training Instructor, either for Outspoken Training or another Bikeability provider.
